Bayonetta is a third-person action game developed by Platinum Games and published by Sega. The game was originally released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in October 2009, and in North America and Europe in January 2010. The game was later released on the Wii U alongside its sequel, Bayonetta 2, releasing in September 2014 in Japan and October 2014 in North America and Europe.

Bayonetta centers on its title character, the witch Bayonetta, who uses firearms and magical attacks to fight against angelic enemies. The game was praised for its easily learned yet deep fast-paced combat, presentation and upbeat soundtrack, and has sold over 1.35 million units worldwide as of 2010. An anime film adaptation of the game by Gonzo, titled Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, was released in Japan in November 2013.

Bayonetta (real name Cereza) is the eponymous main character and protagonist of the Bayonetta series. She is a coquettish and mysterious Umbra Witch, who possesses a remarkable talent for the Bullet Arts and is the bearer of the Left Eye, that oversees the darkness.

In the first game, after a 500 year slumber in a coffin submerged at the bottom of a lake, Bayonetta battles against the angelic hordes of Paradiso in order to discover the truth about her past and what she has forgotten during her sleep. In the sequel, Bayonetta now fights to rescue Jeanne, her clan sister who was taken to the realm of Inferno. With the help of Rodin, her demonic weapon smith and proprietor of The Gates of Hell bar, she is hounded endlessly by hosts of angels along the way.

Jeanne is an Umbra Witch and Bayonetta's eventual ally in her fights against the forces of Paradiso. She was originally the heiress to the Umbran Throne 500 years ago and has a friendly rivalry with Bayonetta that has lasted nearly as long. When Jeanne first appears, she seems to be on the side of the angel sand converses with most of the four Cardina Virtues. Jeanne must be defeated four times throughout the first game.

In the second game, Jeanne aids Bayonetta during some of her angel battles. During a demon summon gone wrong, her soul is dragged down to Inferno and Bayonetta journeys to Fimbulventrto rescue her.

By fulfilling certain conditions for both games, Jeanne can be used in Story Mode and Tag Climax.
